Our history and vision
The late Reverend Lillian Frances started the Golden Oldies community care project in 1991. Shortly after her retirement Reverend Francis sought out social organisations for older people, especially of Afro Caribbean descent. Her aim was to keep mentally and physically active and sustain civic participation within her community. To her dismay she found there were no services and so she founded Golden Oldies.
We continue to support the vision of Reverend Lillian Frances, and aim to keep older people physically active, independent and fully participating in their community.
Our mission statement
“Empowering and supporting older people to live healthy and productive lives in later years, participating in their communities”
Golden Oldies members are older people aged 60+ from the African-Caribbean community in Southwark, in particular Camberwell, Peckham, Rotherhithe, South Bermondsey and East Walworth. We currently have 45 older African-Caribbean members and through our programmes of support are aiming to extend our reach to a total of 75 older people
Our membership database is supplemented through making contact with other BME led senior groups and churches, for example. This enables us to establish information on numbers of BAME elderly isolated in the area - including those from ‘emerging’ migrant communities locally, any organisations involved, those interested in becoming engaged in activities, or becoming involved as volunteers, to help us develop interesting and informative programmes of interest.
Our members’ needs
Over the years Golden Oldies has been aware of relevant research on elderly needs and based on this research has made great efforts to help our members by assisting them to address the many health and well-being challenges they may face through:
- becoming actively engaged in physically and mentally stimulating activities,
- mixing with the range of generations and communities in which they live
- are able to play their part and can share their rich heritage with others.
